Active overvoltage protection (option AOP) for DC sources

Overvoltage peaks generated by the customer's application can destroy the output circuit of DC sources. To protect the output circuit from damage, we offer active overvoltage protection as an option AOP for our laboratory power supplies of the LAB/HP 3 kW to 63 kW series. The active overvoltage protection is realised with an additional integrated load in the output circuit of the laboratory power supply.

The additional load in the output circuit of the DC sources protects electronic circuits from short-term or longer-lasting voltage pulses. In this operating state, the electronic load limits the voltage pulse to the set value before the following internal components can be damaged. The advantage of an active overvoltage protection compared to a passive overvoltage protection is that the set voltage is not exceeded and thus a higher operational safety is given. Voltage pulses occur, among other things, when a circuit is opened, e.g. by switching off electrical devices or activating a circuit breaker (double battery system). In automated test sequences where the test objects are switched on and off in a short time sequence or when electric motors are braked, the AOP option is a useful extension to increase the process reliability of the test sequences.
